Principal's Desk
It is my immense pleasure to welcome all the students joining Garhbeta College for pursuing their higher studies during the session 2022-2023. Garhbeta College is one of the oldest colleges in the undivided Midnapore District in the post independence period. The college was established on 13th August, 1948 and we have celebrated the 75th years of establishment on 13th August, 2022 in a befitting manner. A three day programme has been organized on and from 13-15th August,2022 to celebrate the historic moment of our college. This academic session is very much important to all of us as it is treated as ‘75th Anniversary Year’ of Garhbeta College which will be completed by a similar colourful occasion on 13th August , 2023. A beautiful souvenir has been published to commemorate the great occasion. The college authority has decided to construct a ‘SMARAK BHAVAN’ (the 2nd Floor of Ambedkar Bhavan) for the 75th anniversary of the college which will be opened during the concluding ceremony on 13th August, 2023.
The college is now upgraded as an ideal place of education in a vast area (22 acre approx.) also in a very beautiful location in a close vicinity to ‘GANGONI’ (the ‘Grand Canyon of Bengal’) in the bank of river Shilaboti with its own scenic beauty like a ‘TOPOBAN’. The greenery of our college is a great beauty that attracts all the visitors. This beauty of the campus alongsidethe road also catches the eye of every passer-by. It is our dream to promote this institution to be an ideal educational hub of modern times. We have recently resumed our off classes after recovering the serious loss in the teaching learning process due to Covid 19 pandemic restrictions during the past two sessions ( 2020-2021 & 2021-2022). The college authority is now trying to compensate the loss as much as possible and taking many effective measures for facing the 2nd cycle of NAAC assessment during this year with a target to achieve a much better score than the previous one.
A galaxy of eminent teachers has served this institution with their endless efforts to teach their students, many of their former students are in several higher positions in India and abroad. Maintaining the heritage of this institution, the present enriched faculty members of the college have tried their best with its sole objective of providing quality education. The faculty strength is very high at present (more than 100) in the college. Many quality teachers have joined the college through WBCSC in various subjects in the recent past. There is only one full time teaching post lying vacant in Physiology. The nonteaching staff strength in the college is also adequate after recruitment of staff in the permanent vacancies.
The college is now in a position of enjoying greater infrastructural facilities due to renovation and expansion of existing college building. A new Boys’ Hostel has been constructed with two other existing hostels (one for Ladies and another for Boys) in the college campus with a capacity to accommodate 75 more students from the backward classes with an attached ‘Guest Quarter’ for the visitors, funded by the State Government. The college is already equipped with various facilities like beautiful foot ball ground, Gymnasium with multigym facilities & physiotherapy unit, Volleyball Court, Kho-Kho Field, NSS with Four Units, NCC (two companies) with firing range, modernized College Library and some other valuable assets. Many other recent developments have been initiated like modernization of class rooms (ICT enabled class room) and improvement of laboratories considering the modernization of teaching learning process as per CBCS curriculum implemented by the Vidyasagar University. The college library has been recently modernized with KOHA software for accessing the students online including installation of soft ware for accessing books from home . The college website also upgraded and developed with a new domain (ac.in) giving much emphasis on online teaching learning processes in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Besides teaching, the college has been giving due emphasis in research activities, a number of Research Projects funded by the UGC and other funding agencies are conducted by the faculties over the years.
The college is successfully running Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU), a distance learning University as study centre since 2004 affiliating various UG & PG courses for both Arts and Science. The B.P.Ed course in the college is also running successfully since 2003 with variousprograms organized by the students and the faculty members. The newly introduced four Post Graduate courses and BCA course are running successfully since few years. A few remarkable successes were gained by a student of PG Mathematics in higher studies and notable achievement has been made by many BCA students in campus recruitment programme of some reputed companies like Wipro, Infosys, Deloitte etc. and also in ICICI Bank and already got placement in those concerns in recent past. Keeping in view the demand of time, the college has taken special drive to revive Commerce education with Honours in Accounting & Finance.
The IQAC of the college has introduced ‘Incentive programme’ for the students and teachers of the college with due approval of the Governing of the college for quality education and also to encourage the students and teachers for higher studies / research. The faculty exchange programme has been initiated with three colleges for few subjects to improve the quality of education during this pandemic period. A few departments have organized seminar at National and international level with some eminent speakers of international reputations. A blended mode of education has been introduced in various departments, especially in PG courses since Covid 19 period. The guardians were also met offline as well as online in various subjects during this session for sharing information about the progress of their wards and for improving Parent-Teacher relationship as well. The college fees for all the existing streams (both UG & PG) have been waived to a considerable extent keeping in mind the financial condition of the guardians during the present Covid Pandemic situation. The Alumni Association of the college has been reconstructed for making relationship between the former students and the present students for their future benefit.
Ragging in the college campus is totally banned in all its departments, constitutional units, including all its premises (academic, residential,sports, canteen etc) and in all means of transportation of the students whether public or private and any one found guilty of ragging and /or abetting raging is liable to be punished appropriately. ICC (Internal Complaint Cell) has been activated after the pandemic period as per guidelines of UGC.
I am very much proud of my institution for having a very co-operative Governing Body, faculty members, non-teaching staff and otherassociated staff. The Governing Body of the college has enabled me running a fair and transparent administration and has taken many bold positive steps to improve efficiency in order to provide quality education.I am also grateful for valuable guidance from Vidyasagar University, local authorities like Garhbeta Block-I Panchayet Samity, Police Station & Garhbeta Health Centre. I am also grateful to all our patrons, well wishers, guardians and local people for theirfull co-operation enabling me running the college in a smooth way. We would always look forward for constructive and valuable suggestions forpaving the path of a better tomorrow and reaching towards a desired destination.
