History of the Department of English:
The Department of English at Garhbeta College was established in 1948, marking the beginning of a distinguished journey in the field of literary education. Initially, the department offered general English courses, which provided a solid foundation for students' linguistic and literary skills. In 1993, the department took a significant step forward with the introduction of the English Honours program. This addition allowed students to delve deeper into the intricacies of English literature and language, fostering a more specialized academic environment.
Currently, the department boasts two Substantive faculty members and three State Aided College Teachers (SACT), all dedicated to maintaining high academic standards and enriching the students' learning experience. Each year, approximately 110 students enroll in the Honours course, reflecting the department’s robust reputation and the high demand for its programs. The department has a proud tradition of producing graduates who have excelled in various fields. Many alumni have pursued advanced studies and achieved notable success in their respective careers.
The department’s graduates have become school teachers, assistant professors, corporate officers, police personnel,
bankers, and civil service aspirants, contributing significantly to their professions and society at large.
