Objective
The modern civilization is dependent upon energy more than ever in the past. Staring from a small cell phone to large scale industries, all are driven by energy. The demand for energy by modern human civilization is increasing rapidly with the establishment of new metropolitan cities and large scale industries all over the world. But today’s main energy sources (fossil fuels) are finite and long-term effects of their use is detrimental for the environment. This enforces us to look for ‘green energy’ sources, such as sunlight, wind, tides, rain, waves, geothermal heat, bio-mass and bio-fuel.
This course is designed to make students aware of following:

• Utilization of abundant natural energy resources to reduce dependency on fossil fuels

• Latest technologies used to harness green energy from nature

• Lowering carbon emission, greenhouse gases and hence global warming in order to protect Mother Nature

Curriculum for this Add-on Course
➤ Module 1 :
- ✔ India’s current energy scenario, drawbacks of fossil fuels, need for green energy - 2 hours
- ✔ Photovoltaic technology - 2 hours
- ✔ Organic and perovskite solar cells - 2 hours
- ✔ Solar thermal devices - 2 hours
- ✔ First tutorials - 1 hour
➤ Module 2 :
- ✔ Various types of wind turbines and grid interconnections - 2 hour
- ✔ Marine power: wave energy devices, tidal and osmotic power, OTEC technology - 2 hour
- ✔ Hydroelectricity, formation of dams, rain water harvesting - 2 hour
- ✔ Second tutorials - 1 hour
➤ Module 3 :
- ✔ Fonts & spacing - 1 hour
- ✔ Biomass energy: utilization of agricultural, animal and industrial wastes - 2 hour
- ✔ Geo-thermal power, hot springs - 2 hour
- ✔ Piezoelectric, electromagnetic and nuclear energy: environmental impact - 2 hours
- ✔ Our responsibility to build a sustainable future and conclusion - 2 hour
- ✔ Third tutorials - 1 hour
➤ Module 4 :
- ✔ Generating thermo-electricity from temperature difference of water - 2 hours
- ✔ Operating small fans, buzz, LEDs using solar cells - 2 hours 30 minutes
- ✔ Variation of solar power with light intensity, shielding, and wavelength - 2 hours
- ✔ Calculation of V oc , J sc , FF and efficiency of solar cell from the I-V characterization - 2 hours
- ✔ Final Tutorial - 1 hour
Assessment / Examination
1. Step 1 – Performances in the quizzes and tutorials
2. Step 2 – Viva-voce conducted by the college
3. Step 3 – Performance in practical classes
Certification
The students will be given certificates from Garhbeta College after successful completion of the course. Their performances will be assessed through viva-voce, written and practical exams.
