History of the Department
Garhbeta College is located at the extreme north end of the district Paschim Medinipur and it is surrounded by many underdeveloped villages with a large number of illiterate and poor people. This college was founded on 13th August in the year 1948. Biological Science was first taught at the Pre –University level under Calcutta University and then as Life Science at the H.S. level in the year 1984, The University of Calcutta granted the affiliation in Botany at the U.G. level as a pass-course subject. Dr. Aloke Bhattacharya was appointed as the first Lecturer in Botany along with Mr.Tamal De and Madan Mohan Singha Roy as Laboratory attendants respectively. Within a year Dr. Bhattacharya left this college and the name of Dr.B.B.Dey was recommended by the CSC in that vacant post. On 1st October 1985, Dr.B.B.Dey took the charge of this department and tried his best to develop this newly built department with the full cooperation of the college authority, departmental colleagues, and students. In the year 1990, Dr.Samit Dutta Roy had joined as the Lecturer in Botany in the 2nd post approved in the department by the Govt. of W.B. The department got the honours teaching affiliation from the Vidyasagar University in 1998. Dr.B.B.Dey retired from his service in November 2011. Dr.Samit Dutta Roy took the charge of this department and tried his best to develop this department with the full cooperation of the college authority, departmental colleagues, and students. During his tenure, the department of botany published a wonderful book entitled “CHARAK UDDYAN MEDICINAL PLANT”. Also, the department maintains a large number of medicinal plants (Charak Uddyan) and a collection of succulent plants under net house conditions. A well-established ethnobotanical museum maintains by the department. A composting treatment system maintains by our department. Dr. Samit Dutta Roy retired from his service in 31st October 2016. After retirement from his service, Dr. Samit Dutta Roy continues his work as a guest faculty in this dept till 2019. In the year 2019, Mr. Kunwar Hansda and Dr.Sk.Sahanawaz Alam joined as the Assistant Professor in Botany in this department. Mr. Kunwar Hansda took the charge of this department as a HOD.
At present, the department has two Assistant professors, four SACT Teachers, one GLI and, three Laboratory staff.
