History of the Department

Garhbeta College was once the only higher academic Institution of some parts of undivided Midnapore district with the surrounding area of Garhbeta, Chandrakona, Ghatal and some of the parts of Bankura District. Under the brilliant Headship of Sri Bibhuti Bhusan Banerjee the Dept started her walk in the world of Higher Education with Fourteen students in the year of 1948. The Ray of light becomes brighter when Dept started her Honors Course with the number of sixty students under the headship of Sri Arun Kumar Roy in the year of 1995-96. Sri Asutosh Ghoshal Sri Asim Sanyal, Kishori Mohon Senapati laid the foundation of the Dept. From the year of 2017 the department started her glorious journey by starting Post Graduate Course. At present three whole time faculty members prof. Chandan Nag, Dr. Rita Sil (HOD), Prof. Rabindra Nath Mudi (PG Coordinator) and two for SACT Sri Raju Bhui, Dr. Pintu Shit & Miss. Rupali Atta were teaching Post Graduate, Honours and General Course.

Now the Dept. has Three hundred Honors students and Two thousands General Students. Honors affiliation in Bengali was granted by the University of Calcutta. In the year of………the affiliation was shifted to Vidyasagar University. The collection of text and reference books is also high. The Students of Bengali Dept. can also avail the books of others discipline. Our Students secured well position in the examination conducted by the Vidyasagar University. Many of our Students got 1st class in the recent published University Examination in both Hons & PG course. The Dept. had organized the first National Seminar of this College in 2011, which was funded by the UGC. The dept. organized a three days state level Webinar from 5th September to 7th September 2020. In the current pendamic situation the Dept. offered onlone classes to its students. The Dept. also published wall magazine in every year.

Mission and Vision of the Department

Bengali is the one of the oldest Literature and Language based subject. It’s originated by the Prakrita ‘Magadhi Apabransh.’ Bengali is very much enriched with Classical Sanskrit Literature. Like the wave of a river Bengali Language and Literature is smooth and assembles several words from several languages in her womb. The mission of this Dept. is to build up a good academic environment as well as explore creative thoughts among her Teachers and Students. In future the Dept. likes to open Departmental Library for her students. The Dept. also wishes to set up a Language Lab for students.
