History of the Department

With the motto of serving the society in a much better way, a group of social workers under the leadership of Late Govinda Kr. Sinha established Garhbeta College on 13th August, 1948 for spreading education beyond the school level in an area mostly covered by SC., ST., OBC and educational backward people. At the time of establishment of the college Garhbeta was totally a bushy rural area with no inhabitants within a distance of half kilometer on all sides of the college.

At the time the people of Garhbeta were very much interested in sports and games. They had also very much talent in sports activities. Many renowned footballers and athletes of Garhbeta participated in football and athletics competitions through the undivided Midnapore district. A standard football stadium and 200 meter athletics track are also situated nearby of Garhbeta College. Considering the sporting spirit of the people of this area the Governing body of Garhbeta College applied for affiliation of Physical Education as a pass subject and the university authority was kind enough to give affiliation in this regard in 1996. The Department of Physical Education of Garhbeta College is the pioneer educational institution along with Midnapore College where Physical Education subject was introduced at college level curriculum in West Bengal in the year of 1996.

About the Department

Since this department is running very smoothly. Students are so much interested in Physical Education that even students of vocational education also get themselves admitted in degree course with Physical Education as one of their general subject. Presently maximum number of players of different teams of our college are representing from this department. Among them every year 05 to 08 players are also representing Vidyasagar University in the East Zone Inter University and All India Inter University (AIU) tournament.

All members of teaching staff give leadership training and inculcate disciplined attitude in our students. Our students are very much attracted to practical classes. Students of our department take leading role in social activities as NSS volunteers in and outside college campus. In the current session there are 312 students studying Physical Education as a general subject (counting Semester II, IV & VI students together). Our department is situated in Vivekananda Bhaban.
